I came across this blog about "hand sanitizers", and their safety. The writer points out that they are nervous that one of the brands uses a "patented formula" which screams to her ... "we dont have to tell you what's inside!".

I felt the same way, so I requested their patent number and was shocked and disappointed with what I found. This alcohol free formula has alcohol, along with tween 80 which is also called polysorbate 80--- linked to reproductive issues among other things. The patent also says they test on animals which wasn't cool. None of these things are on their "natural product" label.

Once I heard they were teaming with Seventh Generation- I thought... OMGosh, they must not know because a company with such integrity would never team up with a product that says its something it is not. Boy was I naive! I received a short email response from Seventh Generation saying that the patent I viewed was the company's old patent and now they have a new one.

Hmmm, so... new patent but no new labeling -- so what changed aside from the "paperwork"? And, does that make it ok that they misled the public for the last year or so with a "not so" alcohol free hand sanitizer, but now they've changed it so its ok now?

If a company is going to mislead the public once, who's to say they are telling the truth now? I'm still skeptical and very disappointed because I believe we as natural companies have a responsibility to deliver products that the public can count on. I want to know what I'm putting on my babies skin and disingenuous labeling makes me coo coo crazy.

There’s nothing I could find to complain about! They smell good, they moisturize my skin instead of drying it out, and I love and trust tea tree oil, so that’s good enough for me.

What I discovered is that alcohol based hand sanitizers kill both bad and good germs on your skin making you more susceptible to the very things that make you sick. Using Tea Tree oil, which has antibacterial properties is used to clean off the icky without harming the good stuff that helps keep you healthy (and soft). Not to mention alcohol based hand sanitizers can be dangerous to little kids (especially if they decide to eat it).

Cheryl Bartholomew writes:

Clean George is a new, all natural hand sanitizer / purifier created for little hands. Tracy, the creator of Clean George, had the vision for it after seeing a child be slathered in Purell which is based in alcohol as the sanitizing agent. Alcohol, while indisputably is one of the leading sanitizers available, is extremely harsh on skin. If you have ever used Purell for an extended period of time, you are aware that your hands start to become dried out without lotion. Thus with this issue the idea for Clean George was born.

The basics of how it works is that the ingredients are all organic and natural purifiers from the plant kingdom. Tea Tree and Manuka Oils are recognized by many countries as natural cleansing remedies. Tracy consulted with leading naturopathic chemists to ensure the product was created healthy, natural, and good for the environment. In addition, since all the ingredients are natural, there is no germ resistance to the cleaners which happens to the overly zealous alcohol based sanitizers.

Currently there are three flavors available that will pique everyone's senses. Mint-alyptus is my personal favorite along with my three year old. He uses the product daily and has not complained once about his hands hurting like he did with Purell. Grapefruit n' Sage is slightly milder smelling product that my one year old likes. Lovin' Lavender smells just like it sounds with sweet smelling lavender which is great for sanitizing right before bed or naps. Each bottle holds roughly 400 squirts which makes the cost of a bottle less than three cents per squirt. In addition, if you use one squire every day before meal times then the bottle will last you over 133 days.

I highly recommend picking up a bottle either on the Clean George website or from a Whole Foods near you. The price on the Clean George website is $9.99 per bottle but I can assure you that it is well worth the cost. If you still are not sold on this product, keep in mind that it is great for the environment. Even the packaging is Earth friendly and uses recycled plastic and veggie ink. Three percent of proceeds made from Clean George sales are donated to environmental charities.

With news of the Swine Flu pandemic infiltrating the news circuit nationwide, everyone’s taking precautions and number one on the list of precautions is picking up a hand sanitizer from your corner drug store. But did you know that the majority of these hand sanitizers contain harsh chemicals that strip the skin of natural oils and are unsafe for children? Fortunately, there’s now an organically pure alternative for disinfecting hands when soap and water aren’t readily available. Clean George, the first organic hand purifier that is also a moisturizer is a completely alcohol-free product that contains tea tree and manuka oils, natural antibacterials.
