What’s in your “natural” products?

Ok, hip hip hurray ... we're starting a video blog!

I'm going coo coo crazy with all the "natural" companies out there making claims that their products are natural and HELLO, wake up and smell the Kombucha... those ingredients are not natural.

Good news is that we're also going to be sharing all the companies and products that we feel are what they say they are. Woo Hoo!

More to come...

Triclosan- linked to cancer

Hello hello,

Another video blog, this one about Triclosan, a commonly used ingredient in hand sanitizers, antibacterial hand washes and alot of products you'd be surprised about actually.

We found out on the Skin Deep data base website that Triclosan is linked to cancer as well as a bunch of other not so nice stuff.

Rave reviews for an alcohol free hand sanitizer

Ok, so "Verdemama", is pretty cool. We found her review for Clean George and wanted to see who was writing about us so I checked out her tweets :) This gal is pretty nifty, funny and has great taste in hand cleaners!

Hand sanitizers, not as safe as you think

I came across this blog about "hand sanitizers", and their safety. The writer points out that they are nervous that one of the brands uses a "patented formula" which screams to her ... "we dont have to tell you what's inside!".

I felt the same way, so I requested their patent number and was shocked and disappointed with what I found. This alcohol free formula has alcohol, along with tween 80 which is also called polysorbate 80--- linked to reproductive issues among other things. The patent also says they test on animals which wasn't cool. None of these things are on their "natural product" label.

Once I heard they were teaming with Seventh Generation- I thought... OMGosh, they must not know because a company with such integrity would never team up with a product that says its something it is not. Boy was I naive! I received a short email response from Seventh Generation saying that the patent I viewed was the company's old patent and now they have a new one.

Hmmm, so... new patent but no new labeling -- so what changed aside from the "paperwork"? And, does that make it ok that they misled the public for the last year or so with a "not so" alcohol free hand sanitizer, but now they've changed it so its ok now?

If a company is going to mislead the public once, who's to say they are telling the truth now? I'm still skeptical and very disappointed because I believe we as natural companies have a responsibility to deliver products that the public can count on. I want to know what I'm putting on my babies skin and disingenuous labeling makes me coo coo crazy.

The sweetness of raw milk

I'm a serious milk drinker and have been since I was little. I've also been sickly since I was small with chronic strep throat and tonsillitis until I changed my diet. 7 years actually now since I've had a sore throat. Woo hoo!

Raw dairy was a huge part of this change for me, it also stopped the little white bumps I used to have on my forehead which a dermatologist told me was from too much pasteurized dairy.

I found this article which is pretty informative about the benefits of "raw milk", and some resources. My favorite is Organic Pastures in California but there are great farms all over, you just have to seek them out!

What I find interesting is somewhere around 100,000 people die each year in this country because of wrong use of pharmaceutical drugs or hospital negligence and we hardly hear a peep from the media about any of it, yet if one person gets sick "possibly" from raw milk, suddenly there are laws being drawn to ban the raw dairy's. The biggest concern people seem to have is "will it make me sick"? Well, from personal experience, my family and I have been drinking it now for 7 years- I drank it just about every day of my pregnancy and now give it to my 17 month old as well and none of us have ever had any issues.

Of course, do your research, find a good, clean and responsible farm and only do what you are comfortable with.

Ultrasound during pregnancy- cause for concern?

I had a home birth and thought I was up on birthing naturally, but I recently came across an article about "ultrasound concerns", and if I choose to have another baby, I will think twice about this screening device.

The article mentions that left handedness in children who are supposed to be right-handed has been linked to ultra sound. Sounds like no big deal, I happen to like lefty's, but they are saying the reason they end up left handed is because of a subtle damage to the brain and males seem to be more affected than female fetuses, probably because the male brain develops later.

Studies also show the following abnormalities have been linked to ultrasound- Early labor, premature birth, miscarriage, increased learning disabilities and delayed speech development (these are just a few listed).
